Martyn's Law requires certain public venues and events to take reasonable steps to prepare for and respond to a potential terrorist attack. The law, officially the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, establishes a tiered system based on the venue's capacity, requiring smaller "standard tier" venues to focus on policy and procedures, while larger "enhanced tier" venues must go further to reduce their vulnerability to attacks. Key requirements include risk assessments, staff training, and implementing security measures.

Weekly fire alarm testing is vital to ensure the reliability and readiness of the fire detection and alarm system in protecting life and property. Regular tests confirm that alarm sounders, manual call points, and signalling paths, including connections to any Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC), are functioning correctly and that any faults are identified and addressed promptly. Conducting tests at the same time each week also helps occupants recognise the alarm sound and reinforces fire safety awareness, while providing early warning of potential system issues before an actual emergency occurs.

A West Bromwich industrial estate blaze highlights the urgent need for fire risk assessment, fire alarms, fire safety equipment and sprinklers. In July 2025, a major fire ripped through an industrial estate in West Bromwich, destroying four factory units and sparking a large-scale emergency response.

A former waste site Director has been sentenced over illegal practices which lead to a major fire in Lancaster. The blaze, which broke out at Supa Skips in Lancaster in December 2023, was fuelled by abandoned waste and led to weeks of disruption. Cleanup costs exceeded £2 million, according to the Environment Agency (EA).
