Guidance On PFAS In Firefighting Foams Restriction Update

With upcoming bans on chemicals such as PFOS and PFOA, the firefighting foam industry is facing significant regulatory changes which will impact on one of the most basic tools in fire safety equipment, the fire extinguisher. As key restrictions take effect, it’s more important than ever to stay ahead of these developments. If you’re involved with firefighting foams, the regulatory landscape is shifting quickly. Although fluorotelomer-based AFFF (aqueous film-forming foams) are still permitted, new restrictions are emerging, especially in the EU. These include bans on chemicals like PFOS, PFOA, and PFHxS, which are being phased out due to their adverse environmental and health effects.

With the PFOA ban set for July 2025, now is the time to evaluate your fire safety systems and understand how these regulations may impact you. Don’t risk being unprepared. The full guidance document is available on the FIA website, providing detailed information about the restrictions, their implications for firefighting equipment, and how to ensure compliance. PFAS are a group of chemicals commonly used in various industrial applications, including firefighting equipment. Known for their water and grease-repellent properties, PFAS have been integral in foam fire extinguishers, enhancing their effectiveness in combating fires.

PFOS – Perfluorooctanesulfonic Acid
PFOS is a chemical compound having an eight-carbon fluorocarbon chain and a sulfonic acid functional group, and thus it is a perfluorosulfonic acid and a perfluoroalkyl substance. It is an anthropogenic fluorosurfactant, now regarded as a global pollutant.

PFOA – Perfluorooctanoic Acid
PFOA is part of a larger group of chemicals known as PFAS (Per- and Poly- Fluoroalkylated Substances). These chemicals have many uses such as stain and water-repellent coatings on fabrics and in firefighting foam, including potentially the foam used in some handheld fire extinguishers.

PFHxS – Perfluorohexane Sulfonate
Perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) is a six-carbon compound in the perfluoroalkyl family of chemicals. Perfluorohexane sulfonate was once used in firefighting foam and carpet treatment solutions.
