Fire Service Sees Five-Year High in Fire Incidents

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) has reported a sharp increase in fire-related incidents, reaching the highest levels seen in the past five years. In March alone, firefighters responded to more than 160 fires, a significant rise from 111 during the same month last year. April saw over 200 incidents, up from 131 in April 2024. Over the past 12 months, CFRS recorded 1,911 incidents countywide representing a 13% increase compared to the previous year.

The five-year monthly average for March stands at around 135 incidents, and 162 for April, highlighting the scale of the recent surge. Group Commander James Ball, head of community fire safety, expressed serious concern over the trend. “It is really concerning to see such a significant rise in fires in the last couple of months. We often see an increase as the weather improves and people begin preparing their gardens for summer, but this is well above what we’d expect.”

Many of the fires occurred in homes, most frequently in kitchens due to cooking accidents or faulty appliances. In addition, firefighters tackled around 200 outdoor fires, many of which are believed to have been started deliberately. One recent incident in Huntingdonshire involved a fire sparked by a vanity mirror reflecting sunlight, which led to substantial property damage. Ball emphasised that deliberate fire-setting is a serious crime with severe consequences. He urged parents to talk to their children about the dangers of fire, noting that some incidents involved reports of young people fleeing the scene. “Simple steps like keeping matches and lighters out of children’s reach and ensuring they avoid disused or derelict buildings can make a big difference,” he added. CFRS continues to encourage the public to stay vigilant, practice fire safety, and report any suspicious behaviour.
