Fire Service Issues Safety Warning Ahead of UK Disposable Vape Ban

With the UK banning disposable vapes at the start of June 2025, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) is urging users to be vigilant about fire safety, especially as more people switch to rechargeable devices. In the UK, all disposable vapes became illegal to sell, supply, or possess for sale or supply from June 1st 2025. This ban applies to all retailers, including high street and online shops, and also healthcare and stop smoking services. The ban covers both nicotine and non-nicotine disposable vapes.

While rechargeable vapes are seen as a more sustainable option, they come with risks. Lithium-ion batteries, commonly used in these devices, can overheat or catch fire if misused. ECFRS reports a sharp rise in vape-related fires: from just two incidents in 2021–2022 to 17 in 2023–2024. Unsafe charging practices, particularly using incompatible chargers or leaving devices plugged in unattended are the main culprits.

“Most vape-related fires we attend are preventable,” said Andrea MacAlister, Head of Prevention at ECFRS. “Always use the charger supplied with your vape, and if you need a replacement, buy only from trusted retailers. We’ve seen fires caused by counterfeit and mismatched components. Also, never leave devices charging alone, and avoid throwing vape batteries in household bins—this has led to fires in bin lorries and recycling centres. Use designated recycling points instead.”

Vape Charging Safety Tips

  • Use only the original charger/battery and only use the charger specifically designed for your device, using the wrong one can lead to overheating or fire.
  • Never leave your vape charging unattended, especially overnight or when you’re not at home and avoid overcharging
  • Avoid mixing parts from different brands or models – Avoid tampering with or altering vaping devices. Modifications can lead to malfunction or serious injury.
  • Buy only CE-certified products from reputable retailers – Always purchase vapes, batteries, and accessories from reputable suppliers to ensure they meet safety standards.
  • Dispose of batteries safely and never in household waste – Follow local guidelines for disposing of vapes and batteries. Never throw them in household bins.
  • Avoid Damaged Equipment – So not use or charge vapes with damaged batteries, charging ports, or other components.
  • While vaping generally poses a lower fire risk than smoking, lithium-ion batteries still present serious hazards if mishandled.

Vaping can pose a fire risk primarily due to the lithium-ion batteries used in the devices. These batteries can overheat, explode, or ignite if damaged, overcharged, or improperly disposed of. Fire risks are also associated with counterfeit products, faulty chargers, and using vaping devices near flammable material. Vaping areas are commonplace across businesses and organisations and must be considered within an fire risk assessment process.
