Advice When Considering Commercial Intruder Alarm Systems for Your Business

Before deciding on an intruder alarm, arrange a security risk assessment of your premises.
    This helps identify:

    • Entry and exit vulnerabilities
    • High-value or sensitive areas
    • Hours of operation and staffing levels
    • Local crime risks or insurance requirements

A tailored assessment ensures your alarm system is proportionate, compliant, and cost-effective.

Intruder alarms are categorised into Grades 1 to 4 under British and European Standards (BS EN 50131):

    • Grade 1 – Low risk (domestic or low-value premises).
    • Grade 2 – Low to medium risk (small offices or retail).
    • Grade 3 – Medium to high risk (warehouses, industrial units, large retail).
    • Grade 4 – High risk (banks, high-security environments).

Choosing the correct grade ensures compliance with insurers and effective protection for your business assets.

    Each has its advantages:

    • Wired systems – Reliable, robust, ideal for new builds or permanent sites.
    • Wireless systems – Flexible, quick to install, minimal disruption.
    • Hybrid systems – Combine both, perfect for larger or complex buildings

A professional installer (like SS Systems) can advise which type best suits your premises layout and operational needs.

A monitored alarm system ensures that if your alarm activates outside of business hours, an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) is notified immediately.
They can alert keyholders or request Police response using a Unique Reference Number (URN).
Monitored systems dramatically improve incident response times and peace of mind.

Modern intruder alarms can integrate seamlessly with:

    • CCTV systems (for visual verification of alarms)
    • Access control systems (for automated locking or alerts)
    • Fire alarms (for combined life and property protection)

Integration enhances overall site security and reduces false alarms.

Regular maintenance keeps your alarm reliable and ensures compliance with BS EN 50131 and insurance conditions.
Scheduled servicing includes checking sensors, control panels, backup batteries, and communication links.
Tip: Always work with an SSAIB or NSI-approved providers, they’ll ensure your system meets all legal and quality standards.

Even the best system is ineffective if your staff don’t know how to use it properly. Make sure:

    • Keyholders understand how to arm/disarm the system.
    • Staff know how to respond to alarm activations.
    • Training is included during handover or after system updates.
    • Regular refresher training prevents accidental activations and missed alarms.

Many insurers specify the alarm grade, monitoring type, and maintenance intervals required for policy validity.
Ensure your chosen system and provider meet those criteria, this can reduce premiums and ensure compliance.

Modern systems include technologies like dual detection, sequential confirmation, and CCTV verification to reduce false alarms.
This protects your reputation and avoids potential fines or police response restrictions.

Choose an intruder alarm system that can grow with your business, adding more sensors, zones, or integrated features as needed.
This future proofs your investment and avoids costly replacements down the line.
Maintain a security log book or digital record of:

    • Alarm activations and responses.
    • Maintenance visits.
    • System upgrades or faults.
    • Proper documentation helps demonstrate compliance and can support insurance claims if incidents occur.
Partnering with a SSAIB-approved company like SS Systems guarantees:

    • Fully compliant design and installation.
    • Reliable ongoing maintenance.
    • Professional monitoring and support.
    • Certified documentation for insurers and auditors.

Bonus Tip: Combine your Intruder Alarm maintenance with your CCTV and Access Control servicing.
It saves time, reduces costs, and ensures all systems work together for maximum protection.
